PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The primary purpose of your job position is to coordinate the planning and executing of social, recreational and educational programs for the residents in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, facility policy and procedure, Birchaven Village ethical statement and resident rights, subject to the associate handbook, and as directed by the Administrator.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duty 1: Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent information to assure personnel and resident rights are respected.

Duty 2: Follow requirements for supervisory personnel.

Duty 3: Responsible to help develop and maintain department--including activity equipment and supplies--within operating and capital budget.

Duty 4: Organize, develop, coordinate, and supervise social, recreational and educational activities for residents to create as homelike and personal service as possible.

Duty 5: Plan and develop individual and group activities that stimulate the resident's physical and mental abilities and needs to the fullest extent; that encourage and develop a sense of usefulness and self-respect; and that inhibit, prevent, or overcome the development of symptoms of physical and mental regression due to illness, old age, mental retardation, or developmental disability. Will schedule activities at a time that would provide for maximum involvement by interested residents, including evening and weekends.

Duty 6: Serve as the person ultimately responsible for the activity programming. Oversee the documentation and record-keeping necessary for compliance with in residential care guidelines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The activities program must be directed by a qualified professional who is a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or an activities professional who-

  • Is licensed or registered, if applicable, by the State in which practicing; and
  • Is:
  • Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body OR
  • Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic activities program; OR
  • Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; OR
  • Has completed a training course approved by the State of Ohio.
  • National Certification Council for Activity Professionals - MEPAP Part 1 and MEPAP Part 2

  • • High school diploma required.

    • Must have completed 36 hours and advanced 36 hours training course for Activity Director - State of Ohio. Certification by recognized accreditation organization (National Certification Council for Activity Professionals -NCCAP).

    • Ability to read and interpret documents and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Ability to speak effectively before groups of people. Ability to communicate with residents and encourage them to participate in activity programs.

    • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.

    • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status. Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area's policies and procedures.

    PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Two year experience preferred in the activity program of a long-term care facility.

    This position is classified "at risk" for possible occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.)
