About the Department

The Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery features faculty and staff who tackle complex cases of inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis and pelvic floor disorders. UChicago Medicine is nationally recognized for our surgeons' expertise in complicated benign and malignant disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. We are at the forefront of surgical innovation and highly skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as advanced laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), robotic surgery and endoscopic procedures. The section's educational endeavors focus on training the next generation of colon and rectal surgeons. The colon and rectal surgery fellowship program trains surgeons in the multidisciplinary care of patients with colon and rectal pathologies, provides opportunities for high quality research, and prepares the surgeons for pursuit of academic careers. Fellows can expect a central role in comprehensive multidisciplinary patient management and training in innovative approaches such as robotic surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery - the leading edge of colon and rectal surgical care in the 21st century.

Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments for the Digestive Disease Service Line - Pelvic Floor Program.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes independent clinics.
  • Attends faculty clinics and independently evaluates patients.
  • Provides direct patient care for adult patients with acute and/or chronic illnesses in the outpatient setting.
  • Performs procedures in clinic - i.e. abscess drainages, anorectal manometry, etc.
  • Prescribes appropriate treatments.
  • Makes referrals to other disciplines as indicated.
  • Participates in management decisions.
  • Coordinates follow-up care, including imaging/testing, consultations, or surgery.
  • Interprets internal/external test results.
  • Notifies patients of test results and management plans.
  • Provides patient education regarding pre-operative preparation, post-operative care, anorectal conditions and pelvic floor dysfunction.
  • Works with care team to address patient inquires via email, EPIC, or phone.
  • Obtains medical histories and performs physical assessments.
  • Travel to offsite practices as necessary.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).

Experience:
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.

Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:
  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:
  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Preferred Competencies
  • Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills.
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
  • Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
  • Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skills.
