Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking an Assistant Design Center Manager who will be responsible for managing a diverse group of Engineers and Architects to deliver A/E and remedial design projects to both internal and external clients. This individual will need to be able to lead/manage resources, review and lead multi-discipline design proposals, understand project financials and group profit & loss statements, develop and maintain design standards, and audit projects as part of quality management. They will report directly to the Vice President of the A/E center and essentially serve as second in command. Wood desires a professional with a proven track record of growing an A/E design business in a fast-paced client-oriented consulting environment. The ideal candidate will either live in the metro-Atlanta, Georgia area or near Portland, Maine but can work from home part-time in our flexible work environment.

The ideal candidate will also have a minimum of 5 years of experience leading multi-discipline siting and development projects for new commercial and/or industrial facilities. They will be experienced in managing and leading internal project teams from the proposal stage through design, permitting and construction while serving as the client's consultant and primary point of contact. This includes having experience and understanding aspects of the following:

  • Confidential projects
  • Economic development stakeholders and processes
  • Due diligence/site comparison/ranking
  • Site suitability studies/fatal flaw analysis
  • Constructability reviews
  • Utility availability and capacity evaluations
  • Zoning and entitlements
  • Construction cost estimates
  • Relevant environmental permitting


Key Responsibilities
  • Performs analyses for highly complex engineering projects; demonstrates competency in a combination of areas including staff supervision, technical knowledge, and project management
  • Responsible for making correct interpretations of findings and recognizes and identifies inconsistent or inappropriate results; knows how and when to apply standard practices and techniques to unusual situations
  • Motivates, trains and mentors subordinate staff assigned to his/her tasks or projects; facilitates teamwork to achieve maximum results
  • Assumes full management responsibility and accountability for managing small and large, technically complex critical tasks or projects; develops project strategy and scope; develops realistic budgets and is accountable for them; provides review of project deliverables
  • Manages and communicates results, budget and schedule information to the client and appropriate operations management
  • Audits quality of deliverables and financial performance of team, proactively forecasts workload, participates in recruiting/hiring, and identifies and implements corrective actions where needed
  • Responsible for the identification of new clients and/or developing additional work within an existing project or with an existing client
  • May serve as a seller-doer with revenue generation responsibility of $1M or more annually
  • Has direct staff management responsibilities, including performance management, career development and mentoring
  • May travel to project sites, client offices or other Wood offices, including sites remote from the office, as part of internal team management, project execution or business development


Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or other A/E degree, Masters preferred
  • 15+ years of related work experience
  • Professional Registration, multiple states preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with industry specific software (e.g., MS Office, AutoCAD and MS Project)
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems
  • Demonstrated task, project and people management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously to successful completion (on time and within budget)
  • History of successful personnel management demonstrated through strong retention, low turnover and team growth
  • Demonstrated maturity in judgment, initiative, and client relations
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop business from new and existing clients
