Job Description:


Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.

The Associate Dean assists and works collaboratively with the Deans of Science & Technology and Humanities & Social Sciences. This 12-month administrative faculty position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development. The position is responsible for the development of the schedule of classes for all campuses in coordination with the Deans and for the divisions of Career Technical, Science & Technology and Humanities and Social Sciences. The Associate Dean supports adjunct instructors in the facilitation of classroom content, professional development, and evaluations including the recruitment, hiring, and retention of adjunct instructors. The Associate Dean monitors student evaluations, classroom performance, and appropriate instructional standards for adjunct faculty. This position assists in resolving faculty and student problems related to instruction and prepares performance evaluations of adjunct instructors on the campus. The Associate Dean assists the aforementioned Deans in screening applicants for all full-time instructional positions on campus. The Associate Dean is responsible for monitoring the budget for adjunct instructor salaries in conjunction with the Deans. The Associate Dean assists the Deans in the development of new programs, course offerings and instructional sites affiliated with the college. The Associate Dean assists in the implementation of the college's Truth and Reconciliation Equity Plan. The Associate Dean will also lead the Center for Teaching and Learning and may also serve as a liaison with our local school districts and partners.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate program level assessment and general education outcomes assessment for Arts and Sciences academic programs to meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements
  • Serve as lead role to coordinate and oversee Transfer VA curriculum changes and transitions
  • Serve as academic lead for the implementation of the College's Faculty Mentor program in coordination with the Coordinator of Academic Advising
  • Assist with day to day operations concerning student issues such as course exceptions, withdrawals, withdrawals w/mitigating circumstances, incompletes, grade changes, instructor complaints, overload waivers, formal grievances, third repeats with designated administrative assistant, particularly as these duties relate to part-time faculty.
  • Coordinate class scheduling and course cap discussions for the Science & Technology and Humanities & Social Sciences divisions with the lead scheduler
  • Act as the direct supervisor with evaluative responsibility for the lead scheduler and assistant scheduler(s)
  • Lead the Center for Teaching and Learning and Learning Support staff to implement professional development and training for teaching faculty
  • Assist with annual strategic planning and departmental goals
  • In collaboration with the Deans of Science & Technology and Humanities & Social Sciences, monitor departmental budgets and adjunct budget expenditures

KSA's/Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate/PhD degree with at least a masters degree in a college-related arts and sciences academic discipline from a regionally accredited institution
  • Background in instruction and a minimum of three years full-time successful teaching experience
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and proven management skills to work successfully with faculty, students, and other related personnel
  • Experience with or willingness to learn AI tools
