Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

The general duties of the Automobile Mechanic in the Transportation Department include the following:

  • Performs all major repair work and replacement of defective parts on automobiles and other motorized equipment such as compressors, trucks, and pumps, etc.
  • The most senior Automobile Mechanic must qualify for and substitute as Leader, as assigned.
  • Must drive automotive equipment trucks and operate power equipment (including payloader and forklift as it relates to duties of the Transportation Department).
  • Operates New Jersey emission machines.
  • Prepares and submits necessary records in connection with work performed.
  • Operates usual business machines.
  • Performs other similar or less skilled work as assigned.
  • Assists employees of a higher classification as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Candidate needs to have the ability to read and write in English with comprehension.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Candidate needs to have audio capability to hear engines with a corrective device.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • State Inspector and Brake Certification is required.
  • Auto Repair, Inspections, and Emissions Testing certifications need to be acquired within 6 months of start date.
  • Must have valid State Motor Vehicle Operator's License, CDL required endorsements and Tanker endorsements (CDL permit within 60 days, CDL license within 6 months).

Physical Requirements:

  • Candidate must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Candidate must have the mobility to crawl.
