GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Genetics and Aging Research Unit (GARU) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a highly motivated scientist in for a Data Scientist position to work on Alzheimer's disease. The analyst will be joining a large dynamic research environment in the genetics and aging research unit (Research).

The candidate will work with several large biobanks and AD-specific cohorts with multiple omics data and EHR available to investigate risk and protective genetic factors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and aging. The Data Scientist will perform the following tasks: Data processing and curation, quality control, conduct data analysis and interpret computational research experiments. Additionally, he will develop machine learning models from different data modalities, such as imaging, EHR, omics. Our goal is to improve early detection of AD and identify protective mechanisms which allow individuals to develop resistance against AD.

Programming,data analysis experience, familiarity with HPC and cloud computing, ability to work independently and in teamwork, self-direction, excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Prior research experience in the field of machine learning or statistical genetics is strongly preferred.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • EHR, imaging, WGS, other -omics data organization and processing
  • Creating, executing, and documenting quality control and analysis automated pipelines
  • Apply computational, mathematical, and statistical methods and algorithms in cloud- or HPC- frameworks.
  • Critically review and summarize results, contribute to publications
  • Assist the PI(s) with determining the most suitable methodology
  • Prepare written and/or verbal reports
  • Organize and summarize acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques
  • Organize and/or draft material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts and other documents for publication and/or presentation
  • Participate in the design of experiments
  • Uses statistical and graphic summaries
  • Orients and trains new Research Technicians and Fellows


Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • BS or MS in statistical genetics, bioinformatics, computer science, machine learning or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Knowledge of commonly used programming languages for machine learning and bioinformatics analysis, such as R, Python and shell scripting
  • High analytical skills, ability to learn new computational tools
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as a team member.
  • Has basic understanding of statistics and genetics
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Experience with Unix-based systems
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines
  • Ability to interpret acceptability of data results
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree required; MS preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Required: Bachelor with 3+ years of experience in a research-related field or a Master degree. Preferred: Prior knowledge of machine learning and statistical genetics methods and experience with cloud-computing systems
