Role Summary:

Dexcom's legal team is growing and we are looking for an experienced regulatory attorney capable of taking ownership over complex matters implicating laws and regulations governing medical devices in the United States and the many other countries in which Dexcom conducts business. This role will report to our Vice President, General Counsel, EMEA, APAC, LATAM, Litigation. The candidate will work with a team of motivated and passionate attorneys and business partners across different offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Facilitate the business objectives of the company by providing practical, timely and effective legal support, while minimizing potential legal risks.
  • Proactively issue spot for areas of potential legal risk, develop proposals to address such issues, and present them to the relevant Dexcom teams and/or executives.
  • Provide high quality guidance and support to the company's business units on healthcare and medical device regulatory matters.
  • Direct and manage outside counsel.
  • Gain proficiency in the laws and regulations of relevant foreign jurisdictions
  • Provide legal advice on a broad range of regulatory matters.

Required Qualifications/Education:
  • At least 7 years of experience in regulatory law, including extensive experience with AKS matters, HIPAA and FDA matters and other healthcare regulatory matters.
  • Licensed and admitted to practice law in good standing in at least one U.S. state
  • Ability to manage outside counsel relationships.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating agreements.
  • Ability to effectively manage a variety of projects.
  • Ability to manage and supervise company business constituencies.
  • Commitment to teamwork, integrity, and collegiality.
  • Excellent negotiating skills and communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent decision-making ability and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Comfort working independently and under tight deadlines.
  • Proactive, self-driven and business oriented mindset.

Travel Required:
  • 10%

Functional Description

Manages the legal business matters pertaining to the organization. Acts as advisor, or coordinates with external counsel, on legal issues including but not limited to the organization's government and regulatory compliance, data privacy and risk mitigation, intellectual property and patents. Prepares documents to support same. Reviews legal data and advises organization on appropriate legal action to be taken. Directs internal and external counsel performing litigation on the company's behalf. May, but usually does not, get involved with legal matters handled by outside counsel related to personnel matters. Requires a law degree. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

  • Reviews objectives to determine success of operation. Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.
  • Understands relevant business strategies and impact on the functional area.

  • Provides high-level guidance and support to employees and other managers.
  • Regularly interacts with executives and/or external parties on matters effecting the function.
  • Oversees policies and procedures for immediate function.

  • Works on abstract issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the company.
  • Participates in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
  • Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional or company operations.

Management

  • Able to operate in complex global environment.
  • Manages the activities of a functional area and/or external service providers.
  • People management responsibilities include hiring / terminations, performance reviews, career development coaching and compensation decisions.

Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree with 15+ years of industry experience.
  • 9+ years of successful management experience in relevant industry.

Workplace Type

  • The Workplace Type for this role is Assigned Desk. Based on the nature of your role you will have an assigned desk or office located at a Dexcom site and should plan to be onsite approximately 4-5 days per week.
