Position Summary

Description: Installation and servicing of all electrical equipment throughout the plant not contracted to outside concerns. Balance live loads, wire complex circuits, diagnose trouble and make necessary repairs to simple as well as complex equipment. Supervise other electricians and helpers as assigned. Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures. Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities

Tasks:

  • Diagnose, install, maintain and repair all facility and operating electrical circuits, equipment and appliances using hand tools and testing instruments.
  • Inspect and test electrical lighting, signal, communication and power circuits.
  • Isolate defects in wiring, motors, switches and other electrical equipment using testing instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, volt meter, testing lamp, etc.
  • Replace faulty switches, sockets and other elements of electrical systems.
  • Dismantle electrical machinery and replace defective electrical or mechanical parts such as gears, brushes, and armatures.
  • Mount motors, motor starters, transformers, VFD's and lighting fixtures in to position and complete circuits according to diagram or verbal specifications.
  • Build electrical panels, size wire, run conduit and bend pipe as necessary.
  • Communication with OEM companies and electrical suppliers to determine machine specifications and resolve problems.
  • Occasionally leads other maintenance personnel as appropriate.
  • Assist other trades as required.
  • Respond to and assist during plant emergencies.
  • Keep work areas neat, clean and orderly.
  • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
  • May train new employees.
  • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.

  • Uses the appropriate electronic or manual system to perform the work of the job or department.
  • May use computer systems to enroll in benefits and interact with other company data systems.*

Knowledge:
  • Reading, writing, speaking, comprehension and computer skills in the English language, typically developed through high school education or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively via all these modes.*
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer services. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Building and Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, or other structures.
  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications. Must be able to comprehend the meaning of the calculation.
  • Design- Know how to read and interrupt electrical blueprints, drawings, and models, including arc flash drawings.
  • Must know fundamentals of electricity such as Ohms law, use handbook, and wattage formulas.
  • Electric Codes.

Physical Abilities:
  • Near Vision- The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods.
  • Unlimited ability to climb, and be comfortable working at high elevations.
  • Occasional work in full arc flash PPE attire.
  • Generally handles light parts in making repairs and installations.
  • Some climbing, pulling wires, handling tools, etc.
  • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture), or to an error, when it appears.
  • Ability to perceive and interpret information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch at a level considered normal for a healthy adult. Must exhibit good balance.
  • Maximum lifting requirement is 40 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery.

Working Conditions:

  • Must wear required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, ear plugs, gloves, respirator. (Facial hair cannot interfere with fit of respirator.)
  • Occasional outdoor exposure to hot, cold, and/or damp weather.
  • Occasional exposure to dusts, fumes, metal chips, and odors from an industrial environment.
  • Position is in a factory environment.

Supervision:

May check the work of other electricians and contractors if directed.

During initial training, the incumbent will require close supervision, with supervisor contact several times per day. After demonstration of sustained full comprehension of work instructions, safety procedures, and general department knowledge, daily contact with supervision may reduce to once or twice per day.

Training, Certificates or Licenses:
  • See ISO Skill review.

Education Required:
  • Equivalent to high school plus 2-3 years of apprenticeship or trade training.
  • 2 year technical degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience Required:
  • Journeyman status in a recognized electrical union preferred (i.e. IBEW)
  • Working knowledge of most recent NEC 70 code.
  • Experience/safety training for high voltage applications preferred.
  • 5 plus years of hands-on experience in industrial electrical installations, trouble-shooting and maintenance.
Demonstrated proficiency with electrical measuring instruments
