Fellow in Computational Biology/Human Immunology (Master or post doctoral level)

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a Harvard affiliate, is looking for an exceptional candidate to join the research group of Dr. Georg Lauer in the Division of Gastroenterology. The successful candidate will join a research program focused on T cell immunity against viral infections in humans by pathogens such as HBV, HCV, and on intrahepatic immune cell populations. Our overall aim is to understand the molecular correlates of protective immunity as well as the pathways allowing pathogens to escape immune surveillance in humans. The program is funded by several NIH RO1 and U19 awards but also includes collaborations around disease-specific immunology with industry. Our laboratory and its collaborative environment offer the opportunity to work with complex human immunology data from highly relevant human diseases and to grow professionally in an equally supportive and stimulating environment.

This Research Fellow position offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative team in the Division of Gastroenterology at MGH, and to interact with many outside scientists, including pioneers of system levels immunology in humans at MIT and The Broad Institute. Responsibilities will include developing research protocols and analytic tools for complex systems immunology within heterogeneous human populations, and to apply these tools to different disease cohorts and perturbation scenarios. We already have generated complex single-cell RNA-seq data sets from blood and liver in HBV and HCV infection and are continuously adding data from additional cohorts and using novel omics technologies. The candidate will need a thorough understanding of data/information quality principles, must be comfortable with analysis of extensive data sets, and should understand the specific challenges of data analysis in the complex setting of diverse human populations. Candidate must be self-motivated, independent in task completion, and comfortable accepting feedback and guidance from colleagues. The ability to work well in a team is a must, as well as the maturity to manage numerous research studies simultaneously.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develops and designs upcoming studies together with wet lab colleagues and the PI
  • Calculates sample size and selects appropriate analytical procedures
  • Conducts primary data analyses and refines/develops analytic approaches to the specificities of each project
  • Develops bioinformatics workflows to automate frequently used analytical procedures
  • Reports and summarizes analysis results of a research project by creating graphs, tables, and charts.
  • Assists with statistical analysis and results sections in manuscript preparation
