Purpose

The Field Training Specialist is responsible for assisting in the proper training of field employees across multiple projects to assure all jobs are completed safely and efficiently.

Accountabilities

  1. Safety - Assures achievement of safety objectives by implementing regional safety programs to advance safety awareness and promote safe and efficient methods of performing the work. Performs safety audits and inspections.
  2. Training - Ensures compliance with OSHA training requirements, including forklifts, scissor-lifts, rigging, flagging, fit test, etc. Responsible to assure training tracker is current.
  3. Crew Leaders - Assures the Regional Crew Leader Program is implemented across all projects and establishes Crew Leader Books, along with review on all projects. Perform audits of the crew leader program to ensure that it is being done in the District.
  4. Crew Training - Works with project supervision to determine specific crew training needed. Special focus shall be on all short tenure employees. This is to be hands on training conducted in the field with limited classroom training.
  5. STOP - Is responsible to assure the Regional STOP program is properly implemented on all projects. Also performs Joint STOP Observations on projects in accordance with Region goals.
  6. Supervision - Assists with the development of Field Supervisors, Crew Leaders and crews including selection, training, evaluation, and discipline to ensure an effective and efficient organization. Assists with the selection and movement of personnel between jobsites to maximize efficiency of workforce.
  7. Shared Practices - Assures Shared Practices are implemented across all projects. To include oversight of Shared Practice training for all supervisors.
  8. Recruitment/Integration - Actively participates in recruiting new employees into the Unions. Visit high schools and trade schools to promote the career that can be achieved as a formwork carpenter. Participate in social media to reach potential candidates for enrollment into the Union. Work as a mentor towards any new hires to help them get the early training and support they need.
  9. Other - Performs special projects and completes all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the organization.

Scope

The Field Training Specialist oversees the training of field supervisors, crew leaders, and crews on projects within the Region. This generally involves multiple projects of varying crew sizes encompassing several hundred field workers.

Organization

This position reports to the General Superintendent.

Challenges and Opportunities

The Field Training Specialist is challenged by the transient nature of the workforce and the need for constant training of new workers. This position can be very demanding primarily due to overseeing multiple projects on tight deadlines. The FTS must be able to optimize the conflicting demands of numerous superintendents while ensuring the proper training is provided for supervisors, Crew Leaders, and crews. This can also involve dealing with differing personalities and the need for exceptional interpersonal skills. The position can involve significant amount of time traveling to worksites where the physical conditions can be noisy, dusty, and sometimes hazardous.

Position Requirements - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of Ceco Shared Practices, construction systems, contract documents, materials, equipment utilization, scheduling, and productivity analysis.
  • Well-developed supervisory skills including staffing, training, coaching, and evaluating performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of safety work rules and relevant OSHA requirements and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to present ideas clearly both verbally and in writing. Bilingual language skills preferred.
  • Highly developed organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to make timely, effective decisions.
  • Intermediate PC skills with experience in the Ceco Labor Efficiency program and MS office products such as Work, Excel, and Outlook.
