SUMMARY:

Provide service and preventative maintenance for all aspects of mechanical operations and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration equipment (especially large commercial and specialty systems) so as to support the University's educational mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Responsibilities

  • Performs Preventative Maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the following systems to maximize up time.
    • Control systems including pneumatic and electronic.
    • Other department-specific equipment (e.g. fountains, pools, etc.)
  • Performs HVAC systems inspections and manufacturer recommended preventive maintenance.
  • Subject to being on-call for emergency service after normal hours on rotating basis with other tradesmen in shop.
  • Familiar with the following.
    • Commercial HVAC equipment including chillers, air-conditioners, heat pumps, ice machines, refrigeration, heating converters, boilers and furnaces etc.
    • Electrical power associated with HVAC including starters, fuses, circuit breakers, etc.
Administrative Support
  • All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and are subject to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor.
  • Assist in special events as required to ensure successful outcome.
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Ability to plan and carry out project or maintenance work under supervision (Integrated with all functions).

Project Support
  • Assist HVAC II and Supervisor with coordination of trade work in occupied spaces as it pertains to specific projects within the scope of Physical Plant work
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Requires the employee to work both inside and outside in cold, hot, wet and/or dry conditions.
  • Often required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials, conditions, and/or loud noises.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Required working knowledge of the International Mechanical Code.
  • Preferred basic chemistry.
  • Required knowledge of procedures for safe refrigerant and chemical handling.
  • Required HVAC & Refrigeration basic cycles and principles.
  • Preferred commercial HVAC including chillers, low temperature, specialty (computer room and scientific support).
  • Preferred steam and water heating fundamentals.
  • Preferred electrical basics and controls systems.
  • Preferred ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot schematic diagrams
  • Preferred working knowledge of HVAC and associated systems employing computer-based monitoring and control devices.
  • Required working knowledge of OSHA regulations pertaining to work performed.
  • Required ability to use the International Mechanical Code and perform work in accordance with IMC.
  • Required ability to use tools, meters, gauges and equipment correctly and safely.
  • Required to display a professional manner and appearance at all times.
  • Required ability to troubleshoot and repair problems of varied types.
  • Required to communicate clearly and professionally to all necessary key interfaces information pertaining to quality completion of work.
  • Required physical capable of working as mechanic including lifting heavy parts and work from ladders and hot environments.
  • Preferred welding and/or soldering skills.
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Technical training in mechanical work evidenced by obtaining or ability to obtain Journeyman's Mechanical License (typically 4 years Technical Trade School).
  • Hold Refrigerant Handling Certification (Universal preferred).
  • 3 years of progressively responsible mechanical experience directly related to HVAC systems to include commercial HVAC service and equipment operation.
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Shift varies slightly as work requires *Primary shift - 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (approximately 35 weeks), Secondary shift - 3:30pm - 12:00am (approximately 17 weeks) **secondary shift needed for equipment not able to be shutdown during normal hours. 8 hrs./day; 40 hrs./week
  • Required to work weekends, nights and as needed
  • All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and are subject to work outside the normal schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor.
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 5 (Hiring Range $18.79 to $24.90 per hour)
