476011IE - The International Education Fellow for International Student Engagement is a limited term, one-year (20-30 hour/week) position that facilitates the well-being of and engagement on campus and beyond for international students, including mentorship; creates and maintains connection with student organizations; Student Development (including referrals to relevant units) where international students would benefit from greater engagement; and the Alumni and Career Office, where the special needs of international students have gained a greater focus.

The IE Fellow is a primary advisor for international students for campus integration, and will assist with individual and group advising on connecting with campus life. The Fellow will assist with creating and managing International Education events to meet student needs, including those that specifically support the mentoring program, and helps IE to maximize the impact of International Education Week for on-campus learning.

As assigned by the supervisor, the Fellow will draft and edit IE publications, press releases, and web-based information related to international student engagement and study abroad, and assist with data management regarding international student statistics, surveys, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

FACILITATION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WELL-BEING AND ENGAGEMENT:

  • Serves as a primary contact for international students who seek assistance and/or have concerns about feeling at home and their engagement on campus, helps to create a warm and welcoming environment, and assists with individual and group advising
  • Helps to orient UR's domestic students to appreciate and understand international students' presence and concerns through active participation in student organizations
  • Works in partnership with students and student cultural organizations for International Education Week, ChinaFest, and other events that benefit from direct student voice and participation
  • Helps to connect the International Education office with student organizations on and off campus
  • Helps to plan and host events for international students, including Passport to Virginia, teas, Passport Café soirees, and welcoming events
  • Assists Communications Manager with IE materials, social media, web content, and other means of communication and support relevant for international students, including the weekly newsletter, to familiarize others with student viewpoints

  • LIAISON FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WITH OTHER CAMPUS OFFICES
  • Links with Student Development, Alumni and Career Services, Office of Sustainability, and the College Dean's Offices to help create programming relevant to international student needs
  • Serves as a link for international students for informational, promotional and recruitment events pertaining to semester, summer and short-term study abroad programs, including events offered by Admissions during orientation, and at various times throughout the academic year
  • Coordinates and implements onboarding process for student volunteers who work with international students, including recruitment, orientations, and ongoing trainings

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Knowledge of challenges faced by international students, as well as strategies for successful cross-cultural living
    • Knowledge of and experience with International Education programming and events
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
    • Warm and welcoming manner, good listening and problem-solving skills; ability to have professional rather than personal relationships with students
    • Ability to gather and analyze data and generate reports
    • Knowledge and understanding of meeting and event planning principles, requirements, procedures, and available resources
    • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
    • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals
    • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
    • Knowledge of event facilities, technology, and equipment
    • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials
    • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions
    • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple project
    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's degree required; direct experience in both US and another cultural setting and knowledge of a language other than English. Experience with organizing, promoting and supporting international engagement and participation in student organizations in a higher education context preferred.

    WORK HOURS:
    • Part-time, non-exempt 11-month position
    • This position is limited term up to one year
    • Schedule to be determined; occasional evenings/weekends; 20-30 hours per week; less than 1,000 hours per year
    COVID-19:
