Position Summary
Dominican University of California is seeking to hire a full-time laboratory manager with broad knowledge and a strong background in natural science disciplines including, biology, chemistry, kinesiology, physics, and environmental sciences. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and engage in creative problem-solving processes. The laboratory manager will closely work with the department chair, faculty, staff, students, and other university personnel to support the department's mission.

This position is responsible for supervising lab technicians and work-study/interns, overseeing the preparation of materials for teaching labs, and assisting in research activities as needed. The lab manager is in charge of maintaining an accurate record of supplies, equipment, maintenance, certifications, and invoices of assets. This may also include providing input into departmental budgets and reviewing expenditures. In addition, the lab manager is expected to identify, report, and resolve safety concerns, provide safety training for students and faculty, and properly dispose of all hazardous materials.


Responsibilities:

The lab manager is the point person for the safe functioning of the science department. The major categories of duties are listed below:

  • Strategic Planning

  • Required Qualifications:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Master's degree or higher with 2 - 4 years of experience in natural sciences.
  • Competence in laboratory skills in natural sciences.
  • Understanding of safety regulations concerning the usage, storage, and disposal of biological materials/chemicals.
  • Experience in the use of science equipment commonly found in natural sciences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, engage in creative problem-solving, and work cooperatively with students, faculty, and other staff.
  • Proficient in using a PC/MAC and basic software applications with the ability to troubleshoot common computer hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, possibly including some evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to perform additional duties for the Department as needed.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Broad knowledge and background in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, specifically microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture, and chemistry.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instruments and make basic equipment repairs.
  • Knowledgeable about hazardous materials and their disposal regulations.
  • Experience in managing budgets.
