Job Summary

The Lead Microsoft Azure Data Engineer is a new position at Nordson, required to meet our organization's growth framework. Making decisions based on data that is easily accessible is key to our strategy. As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for providing agile, secure, and easy access to data across many different data sources into our Microsoft Azure environment. You will be responsible for the end-to-end processes required to achieve that goal. The candidate will need strong communication skills to gather requirements from our business partners, then transform those requirements into a logical data model and sustainable technical design, then realize that design leveraging tools in Azure like Data Lakes, Data Factory, Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, etc. Finally, when required build user friendly visualizations, dashboards, and reports with Power BI. As a Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing the process, procedure, and standards in each step of our data journey. You will also provide your technical expertise to the Information Systems application teams, BI center of Excellence and our business partners on any database, data structure, performance, debugging or any other technical assistance as needed.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

• Design, create, modify, and maintain our Microsoft Azure environment to support our growing cloud-based ad-hoc and enterprise level reporting structures
• Create enterprise-level ("EDW") and divisional/functional-level ("datamart") databases and associated objects (tables, views, relationships, semantic layer, etc.) for end consumption by reporting/analytic tools.
• Develop "Data Lake" environment as landing zone of raw data required to feed end data models.
• Implement security mechanisms as required by data content and intended consumer audience.
• Provide expertise within MS Azure to ensure performance, security, reliability, scalability of our environment while ensuring a cost-efficient model
• Support Extract, Transformation and Load (ETL) of data from ERP systems, cloud-based applications, and other datasets into our MS Azure environment
• Design and develop SQL Server stored procedures and functions when developing and supporting the ETL process
• Monitor and configure relevant alerts for database resources, SQL metrics, and Data Factory pipelines
• Manage promoting MS Azure changes from development to production environment
• Meet business requirements for data visualization and create user-friendly dashboards and analytical reports in Power BI
• Plan and prepare a timeline and communicate to stake holders
• Play a lead developer role with clear communications to non-technical business team members
• Collaborates with analytics and business teams to improve data models that feed business intelligence tools, increasing data accessibility, and fostering data-driven decision making across the organization.
• Document environments and processes
• Performance tuning and optimization of SQL queries
• Partner with Application teams to complete reporting and data requests.
• Work with Application teams on Database design questions, new features, and best practices

Education and Experience Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Information Science, Finance, Math, Engineering, or other technical / business field is required. Minimum of 5+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server and 2+ years with Microsoft Azure

Skills and Abilities

• Experienced in designing, maintaining, and documenting a MS Azure environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft's data warehousing model ("ingest and prep", "model and serve", "visualize").
• 4+ years of experience in creating SQL databases and associated objects (tables, views, relationships) as well as semantic layer required to ease end consumption.
• Experienced in developing, maintaining, and monitoring Azure Data Factory pipelines
• Minimum of 4 years' experience in designing and developing ETL Process on AZURE or any equivalent technology platform
• Experience working with enterprise scale Data Lakes (including landing, cleansing, curation, transformation, delta updates, etc.) and associated tools.
• 4+ years' experience supporting Data Visualization solutions or developing Analytics reporting and Dashboards
• Experience working on SQL, T-SQL, Stored procedures, Functions, and various scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, etc.)
• Strong proficiency and experience in Power BI Analytics technology
• Ability to understand complex data models and design data models that work for reporting
• Skill in the use of APIs to extract data from cloud and other application systems
• Excellent time management, teamwork, organization, and communication skills
• Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to determine root cause and resolution quickly
• Experience with Azure Synapse a plus
• Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, IFS a plus
