The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) serves as legal counsel for the University. We advise the Trustees and University Administration on all legal issues and serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving the University.
Job Summary
The Indiana University Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) is seeking a Legal Fellow for a 3 year term.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Works closely with the other attorneys in the OVPGC to provide legal support across Indiana University's 8-campus system.
- Provides support to university clients in a broad range of legal areas, such as athletics, health care, intellectual property, student affairs, faculty affairs, labor and employment, First Amendment, research, data privacy, and information technology.
- Assists with litigation matters, which may include participating in court hearings, depositions, mediations, and/or arbitrations.
- Identifies and works on specific higher education legal issues of interest to them based on office needs.
- Drafts position statements to submit to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Office for Civil Rights, and other state and federal agencies.
General Responsibilities
- Drafts, reviews, and revises routine contracts, release from liability waivers, and other legal documents; conducts legal research on pertinent topics as they arise.
- Drafts legal memoranda educating university clients about legal and compliance issues.
- Assists with the university's responses to subpoenas and open records requests.
- Drafts position statements submitted to the state and federal agencies responsible for investigating allegations of discrimination.
- Performs legal research as needed.
- Assists in other duties, as assigned.
QualificationsEDUCATION
RequiredLICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Licensed to practice law in Indiana or eligible for admission to practice law in Indiana within 6 months from date of hire.
- Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / DemandsThis role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Additional InformationThis position is for a 3 year term.
Recent law school graduates who are taking the July 2024 Indiana bar exam are encouraged to apply.

This is an in-person position.
Advertised Salary$80,000 - $85,000 per year based on experience.
