Position Summary

Description: Ensure operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements of engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines. Follow diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications, troubleshooting malfunctions. Install, level and set up machinery according to requirements. Maintain in good operating condition and remove various types of heavy machine tools, machinery and equipment. Lubricate machinery, change parts, or perform other routine machinery maintenance. Must be able to operate all types of machine tools and be familiar with operating parts. Diagnose causes of machinery trouble; tear down, make repairs- replace worn or broken parts, scraping and fitting to proper operating condition. Maintain belting and line shafting in good operating condition. Machine repair parts and jig and fixture elements when necessary. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities

Tasks:

  • Start machines and observe mechanical operation to determine efficiency and to detect problems.
  • Read work orders and specifications to determine machine and equipment malfunctions requiring repair or maintenance.
  • Inspect or test damaged machine parts, and mark defective areas or advise supervisors of repair needs.
  • Reassemble machines in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Dismantle machines and remove parts for repair, using hand tools, chain falls, jacks, cranes, or hoists.
  • Locate sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation; listening for problems; using precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Remove defective parts by dismantling devices; using hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools; examining form and texture of parts.
  • Determine changes in dimensional requirements of parts by inspecting used parts; using rulers, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments by using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.
  • Control downtime by informing production workers of routine preventive maintenance techniques; monitoring compliance.
  • Fabricate repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level. Anticipate needed equipment, parts, and supplies. Place and expedite orders, verifying receipt.
  • Conserve maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publication, and establishing personal networks.
  • Maintain continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.
  • May train new employees.
  • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
Technology Skills:
  • Uses the appropriate electronic or manual system to perform the work of the job or department.
  • May use computer systems to enroll in benefits and interact with other company data systems.

Knowledge:
  • Reading, writing, speaking, comprehension and computer skills in the English language, typically developed through high school education or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively via all these modes.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer services. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications. Must be able to comprehend the meaning of the calculation.
  • Design- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Equipment Maintenance- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Operation Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Repairing- Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Troubleshooting- Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Operation and Control- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Problem Sensitivity- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Information Ordering- The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
  • Teamwork- Coordinating efforts and supporting coworkers to produce the best outcome.
  • Multitasking- Ability to move from task to task while maintaining concentration amid distraction.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability- Ability to adjust to new conditions and respond effectively to changing environments.

Physical Abilities:
  • Near Vision- The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness- The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
  • Control Precision- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) or to an error, when it appears.
  • Ability to perceive and interpret information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch at a level considered normal for a healthy adult. Must exhibit good balance.
  • Maximum lifting requirement is 40 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery.

Working Conditions:
  • Must wear required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, sometimes harness.
  • Occasional outdoor exposure to hot, cold, and/or damp weather.
  • Occasional exposure to dusts, fumes, metal chips, and odors from an industrial environment.
  • Work at heights of 60 ft. plus.

Position Requirements

Training, Certificates or Licenses:
  • See ISO Skill review.

Education Required:
  • Equivalent to high school plus 2-3 years trade school or trade training; BOCES or other vocational school preferred.
Experience Required:
  • 2 plus years general mechanic maintenance experience preferred.
  • General awareness of electrical principles.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanic systems preferred.
