Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Business Communications, the Manager, Communications for Connecticut is responsible for developing and executing communications strategy for Avangrid's business operations in its home state of Connecticut, including support for our regulated businesses in CT/MA: United Illumination, Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Berkshire Gas. This person will work across corporate, business and internal stakeholders across the company to ensure consistency of message and 'one voice' for the company in line with Avangrid corporate communications strategy and messaging. Working closely with the President of UIL Companies (UI, SCG, CNG and BG) as well as colleagues in communications, regulatory, government affairs, legal and operations, the person in this role will provide communications support in order to enhance the company's reputation and its standing with all stakeholders including customers, elected officials and employees in the communities the companies serve. Responsible for overseeing all communications activities in Connecticut, ensuring alignment with corporate communications strategy. Develops and implements an integrated communications plan to protect, enhance and defend company reputation with internal and external stakeholders. Develops and maintains relationships with key media, both traditional and digital, business and trade and act as a company spokesperson. The Manager will also serve as the Public Information Officer during storm and crisis events. This may include work during non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends. Prepares executives for media interviews and thought leadership opportunities, preparing talking points and overall messaging as needed. Works closely with the President & CEO of UIL and other key leaders to develop and implement internal communications strategies that support employee engagement. Works with employees at all levels throughout the organization and provides decisive recommendations and strategic counsel as needed. Works with Avangrid's corporate leadership and the business to manage crisis and issues management communications, and well as raising positive brand awareness of Avangrid as a leading employer in and a CT-based leader in renewable energy. Anticipates, identifies and mitigates communications and reputation risk. Monitor the development of issues that affect company reputation, develop strategies for addressing each issue and build processes to ensure consistent response to events. Manages overall calendar of communications activities in a way that supports business goals and objectives. Ensures communications activities are appropriate, timely, relevant, and line up with Avangrid Corporate Communications strategy.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:

Bachelors' Degree required with master's degree preferred with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience. Experience developing and executing successful communications strategies that promote, defend and enhance reputation.Crisis and issues management experience.Experience counseling c-suite executives on communications issues.Media relations experience and track record of strong media relationships.Experience working in a highly matrixed organization managing multiple stakeholders.Experience as a spokesperson in positive and negative situations, both for print and in taped and live broadcast interviews.Understanding and interest in public policy, government and municipal relations, sustainability and energy issues. Knowledge of the electric/natural gas industry or regulated industry is considered a plus.

Energetic, motivated self-starter with strong team and cross-functional collaboration skills. Ability to effectively direct and manage priorities while meeting deadlines for deliverables. Ability to make reasonably quick, well-informed strategic decisions. Must have the flexibility to travel.

Avangrid employees may be assigned a system emergency role and in the event of a system emergency, may be required to work outside of their regular schedule/job duties. This is applicable to employees that will work in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York within AVANGRD Network and Corporate functions.
