A new and exciting opportunity for a North America Operational Tax Advisor has been created within the Shared Services Global Operational Tax team.

A role you will love

In this role you will act as an operational tax subject matter expert and provide tax technical advice, guidance and industry insight to stakeholders, peers and colleagues in Computershare's business lines and shared services within North America (US and Canada).

You will act as a second line of defense to implement Computershare's operational tax strategy, policy and governance frameworks ensuring the right resources, capabilities, measures and performance are in place in order to improve efficiency and drive optimal reporting whilst aligning with tax authority expectations.

You will partner with key stakeholders to identify, record, measure and resolve operational tax risk in line with the Global Operational Tax policy.

More specifically you will primarily be responsible for the following:

  • Be the lead subject matter expert on operational tax matters and reporting requirements (particularly US and Canadian tax implications), providing advice, guidance and industry insight to stakeholders, peers and colleagues within the business lines.
  • Responsible for identifying, assessing the impact of and deciding the proposed course of action in relation to complex operational tax issues, including escalation where appropriate.
  • Detailed knowledge of operations, products and services of North American business lines.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to identify, record, measure and resolve operational tax risk in line with global policy.
  • Provision of tax education as required, to ensure operational tax risk is appropriately understood, managed and recorded.
  • Accountable for reporting on and escalating operational tax issues to the Global Head of Operational Tax and the relevant business line stakeholders.
  • Accountable for driving continuous improvement across Operational Tax processes.
  • Managing operational tax related audits and engagement with tax authorities (particularly the IRS and CRA) in conjunction with external advisors and business stakeholders
  • Accountable for agreeing statements of work with external advisors and application of specialist advice
  • Stay up to date with, review and assess the impact of new US and Canadian federal and state legislation/regulations on business lines.
  • Build and maintain networks internally and externally, gaining insight in area of specialism and keep abreast of industry trends.
  • Adherence to all risk, control and governance frameworks
  • Responsible for monitoring US and Canadian tax regulations and assessing their impact on the services, products and operations of the North American business lines.
What will you bring to the role?

To excel in this key role for our business, it is expected that you will possess much of the following skills and experience:
  • Degree educated or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • CTA (Chartered Tax Advisor)/ACA (Association of Chartered Accountants) qualified - or local equivalent (preferred)
  • Experience in effectively managing a range of complex tax situations providing advice, guidance and coaching to stakeholders, including Tax Reporting teams.
  • Technical experience of US and Canadian tax implications of securitizations.
  • Technical experience relating to US and Canadian withholding and reporting regimes applicable to payments from companies and trusts (including dividends, interest, sales proceeds).
  • Technical experience of taxation of employee share schemes and reporting requirements.
  • Practical experience with implementation and risk management in applying these rules in an operational environment.
  • Practical experience of learning and applying new tax concepts/regimes.
  • Experience in engaging and managing external advisors.
  • Experience in solving tax technical problems, including understanding and applying new tax concepts and regimes.
  • Experience in shaping and delivering operational tax policies and procedures.
  • Experience in supporting operational tax projects and risk assessment through others.
  • Ability to work autonomously, navigating through complexity and ambiguity.
  • Ability to represent the Tax function as the regional operational tax subject matter expert.
  • Experience in influencing others to achieve outcomes at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience in engaging with and motivating Tax Reporting Teams and other stakeholders across all levels of seniority / experience.
  • Experience in tax controversy management and engagement with tax authorities to deliver effective outcomes.
  • Ability to work in the abstract and on conceptual issues.
