Summary:
The transplant and cellular therapy patient educator provides pre-therapy education to patients, families, and caregivers via in person classes or tele-education to ensure that patients have an understanding of the treatment processes. During the inpatient stay the educator collaborates with nursing staff and patients to ensure that patients can optimize self-care and are equipped to manage health maintenance after treatment and in the acute and home care settings. Designs and develops evidence-based, and personalized clinical educational programs utilizing research and national guidelines. Anticipates patient needs proactively; coordinates the care and individual assistance to patients, families and caregivers during their new treatment; collaborates with clinicians and members of the interdisciplinary teams to facilitate patient and caregiver concerns that could potentially negatively impact treatment and outcomes at the organization; serves as the primary contact between the patients and ancillary support services for initial treatment or therapy activities, serves a number of different roles including but not limited to: educator, resource person, navigator, patient advocate and organization representative; supports patients for compliance during tests, exams, procedures and consults; participates in discussions with clinicians in identifying high risk behavior; reviews clinical information and provides updated clinical summary of patient to providers as needed; completes and maintains spreadsheets containing patient and caregiver educational participation and develops new innovative ways to track this; discusses with clinicians and team pertinent changes in patient and caregiver situation for new or existing phase of care and any alternative courses of action that needs to be implemented; educates patients, families and caregivers about the treatment process, evaluations as appropriate and long-term follow-up and care; participates in multi-disciplinary conferences; attends educational in-services as appropriate; participates in professional activities and related organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.

Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience

Certification/License
1. Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN) or Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN); and
2. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time oncology nursing experience.

NOTE:
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred candidate will have previous oncology nursing experience and experience with triaging patient calls and symptom management. The preferred candidate will have knowledge of chemotherapy regimens and side effects. The preferred candidate will have experience providing patient & caregiver education and excellent communication and presentation skills.
