As part of the department of Psychiatry, the MGH Ketamine Clinic is among a handful of clinics nationwide that provide accessible esketamine (nasal spray) and IV ketamine for treatment resistant depression. The Ketamine Clinic is expanding to a newly renovated space with access to 40+ treatment hours per week to help support the ongoing and increasing demand for both esketamine and IV ketamine treatment.

Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM), the registered nurse will provide direct clinical care with a primary focus on outpatient esketamine nasal spray and infusion. This role requires a licensed registered nurse with infusion experience. The registered nurse will collaborate with the attending psychiatrist, anesthesiologist, and medical assistants to achieve optimal patient outcomes, and will work closely with non-professional administrative support staff to ensure smooth clinical operations.

The principal responsibility of the infusion nurse is to provide direct patient care with a high level of respect and sensitivity to a highly specialized patient population. The MGH Ketamine Clinic treats patients who suffer from treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal ideation. They are responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, effective, compassionate, and individualized nursing care for patients and their families.

Clinical

• Establishes and maintains an environment that is patient/family focused and sensitive to the diverse needs of patients and staff

• Observes, reports and records vital signs, height and weight, pain level, medication changes and allergies as directed by the provider

• Documents results in the patient's record and medications in the MAR

• Retrieve and distribute, administer medications from the Omnicell

• Monitors vital signs on patient receiving ketamine administration as per protocol



• Promptly informs the MD, anesthesiologist of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms

• Insert and remove IVs

• Administer medication via syringe pump

• Conducts a brief focused assessment of the patient, including interval changes

• Physically prepares patients for and assists care providers with examinations and therapeutic procedures

• Instructs and assists patients while getting infusions

• Ensures patients are safe for discharge

• Instructs patients and families for expectations in the clinic

Operational

• Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient and staff environment.

• Maintains Joint Commission standards on the unit

• Cares for medical equipment and supplies and monitors sterilization of appropriate equipment.

• Collaborates with CNM to identify and meet learning needs

• Attends educational programs to advance knowledge and skill

• Adheres to the standards of required training

• Set up clinic sessions with all necessary supplies and equipment

• Maintains confidentiality and privacy which is consistent with HIPAA guidelines

• Knowledge of Voalte communicating system

• Ensure accuracy of patient consent documentation

• Complete supply inventory

• Other duties as assigned by CNM

Qualifications
Qualifications

  • Experience working with a psychiatric patient population is strongly preferred
  • Strong clinical skills; places and removes IVs
  • Administers medications safely and competently according to policy
  • Accurately completes nursing documentation in EPIC according to policy and procedure
  • Understands end-of-visit and follow-up process/procedures
Graduation from an accredited nursing program, new graduates must have a BSN degree.
