Job Summary
The primary role for this position is to serve as a math tutor working with students in introductory-level courses in a variety of locations across campus, including residence halls, culture centers, other OVPDEMA program offices, and online.
- The incumbent tutors college-age students by teaching mathematical concepts and providing homework help for introductory level courses ranging from basic skills courses (Groups math, M014, M025 and M027) through the general education math courses (M118-Finite, M119-Applied Calculus and M211- Calculus I).
- Functions as an informational resource for student visitors to the ASC, providing more general academic/institutional information upon request.
- Mentors student visitors and other staff members at the ASC, working collaboratively to create a welcoming learning experience.
QualificationsEDUCATION
Required- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University and have successfully taken/received credit for numerous undergraduate math courses (including 200 and 300-level courses, such as calculus II/III, statistics and/or linear algebra).
Preferred- Coursework in or experience teaching finite mathematics strongly preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
- Previous tutoring experience (paid or volunteer) and/or previous teaching experience in mathematics.
- Experience working with the public strongly preferred.
SKILLS
- Displays mastery of quantitative material.
- Possesses strong communication skills and an interest in teaching.
- Patient when dealing with students and other staff members, both individually and in small groups.
- Ability to be a team player who is willing to engage in various professional development opportunities (tutor training, participation at meetings).
- The incumbent is a conscientious employee, observing accepted standards of professional behavior (timely attendance, recording hours).

Advertised Salary$14 per hour.
Work HoursBecause of the ASC's primary operating hours for tutoring and other services (Sunday-Thursday from 7-11 p.m.), math tutors will be expected to work 1-3 evenings per week. Work schedules are set at the beginning of each semester (or at time of hiring). Most ASC math tutors work approximately 4-12 hours per week. Some daytime hours may be required for those tutors who work in various satellite locations.
As the ASC locations are usually open during finals week, employees are expected to work as their schedules permit.
The employee must maintain a maximum of no more than 29 hours per week across all positions of employment held with Indiana University.
