Provides technical supervision and training for subordinate level staff members; performs and manages simple and complex experimental/laboratory tasks independently within the Pathology Resource laboratories and tissue banks to provide services or laboratory results for customers/investigators for use in research projects related to the treatment and prevention of cancer and cancer-related diseases in a timely, accurate and dependable manner.
Grosses/dissects tissue; loads and operates tissue processor; embeds tissue into paraffin blocks; cuts blocks using microtome or cryostat to make slides or needles to make cores; performs simple staining procedures, special staining, immunohistochemistry, macromolecule extractions from fresh/frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue samples; designs and builds tissue microarrays (including compiling and maintenance of data associated with the design, case information and inventory).
Gathers and maintains appropriate data for experiments using the LIMS or Pathology Resource databases and spreadsheets; performs and records quality control and experimental parameters and records of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
Prepares other written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.
Starting salary for this position is $48,603 annually which includes a comprehensive benefits package.
Required Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree in a biological science; or
2. Associate's degree in a biological science and the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time experience as a Histotechnician, Histotechnologist I [Roswell Park], Histotechnologist II [Roswell Park], and/or as a Pathology Resource Technician [Roswell Park]; or
3. High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma and the equivalent of four (4) years of full time experience as a Histotechnician, Histotechnologist I [Roswell Park], Histotechnologist II [Roswell Park], and/or as a Pathology Resource Technician [Roswell Park].
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.
The preferred candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Biological Science and have histology experience. The preferred candidate should have experience working in a research laboratory and working with information management systems/databases/computer skills. In addition, the preferred candidate should have experience troubleshooting equipment errors and coordinating with vendor/technical support; strong attention to detail accuracy.
