Interventional - The Interventional business unit at Teleflex offers innovative medical devices that are used to diagnose and treat coronary and peripheral vascular diseases. Position Summary

The Principal Mechanical Designer's primary job function is creating and developing 3D CAD models and 2D drawings to support new product development. This position supports all phases of new product development from concept through product launch, working cross-functionally with engineering teams.

Principal Responsibilities

• Provides engineering support and technical leadership for new product design and development, existing product modifications, and/or process design, development and improvement, and performance evaluation.
• Lead design and development CAD work streams for R&D in new product development projects from concept to commercialization.
• Responsible for creating 3D CAD designs from early-stage concepts through detailed production drawings and requirements for new product design, tooling, fixturing, gauges etc.
• Lead and participate in design reviews at critical stages of new product development process.
• Participate and contribute in project team meetings, ensuring design development deliverables.
• Leverage expert knowledge and experience of mechanical design, established engineering principals, manufacturing processes, and materials in design projects.
• Verifies completed CAD models and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations for dimensioning and tolerancing
• Identifies errors in design work, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in drawings to design owners
• Facilitate procurement of prototypes, tooling, fixtures, gages, and auxiliary equipment with vendors on design projects.
• Provide mentoring and training to peers and junior team members on advanced 3D CAD modeling functions, and design best practices
• Provide design and drafting support across the organization as needed
• Lead continuous improvement projects for the department
• Support risk management activities for medical devices in new product development

Note: 75% of this job involves direct R&D activities

Education / Experience Requirements

• Associates or technical degree in Engineering Drafting and Design CAD/CAM
• 15+ years of experience in design and development of medical devices
• 10+ years of experience using Solid Works & PDM
• 5 years of experience using Oracle Agile PLM software or equivalent

Specialized Skills / Other Requirements

• Proficient in MS Office applications.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient at communicating effectively across functions to achieve common goals.
• Experience with tolerance stack analysis and application to components and assemblies
• Advanced knowledge of technologies related to catheter design and construction, such as extrusion, injection molding, adhesive, thermal bonding, welding, core winding, and reflow processing
• Expert knowledge of Solid Works design methods including, assemblies, subassemblies, drawings surfacing, sweeps, sheet metal, injection mold design, templates, start parts and assemblies, custom properties, BOMs, top-down design methods, etc.
• Expert knowledge of manufacturing technologies: milling, drilling, turning, EDM, deburring, welding, broaching, stamping, extrusion, injection molding, etc.
• Advanced knowledge of additive manufacturing technologies and materials: FDM, SLS, SLA, Polyjet, etc.
• Advanced knowledge and application of ASME Y14.5-2009 Dimensioning and Tolerancing for Engineering Drawings standard including Geometric Tolerance and Dimensioning (GD&T)
• Experience with and working knowledge of ISO9000, FDA requirements.
• Ability to manage dynamic workload and prioritize small and large tasks efficiently.
• Attention to detail. Ability to manipulate small pieces of data with accuracy and focus, identifying information that does not fit and implementing solutions.
• High mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving/decision-making skills. Ability to think critically and implement solutions independently.
• Communicate effectively to team members and management on project schedules, action items, areas of risk, setbacks, and next steps.
