Professor of Clinical and Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Diagnostics for Kidney Health

DESCRIPTION OF NEED

Recruit a dynamic leader to develop and administer a Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Diagnostics for Kidney Health at the University of Miami. Approximately 38 million people in the United States have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its prevalence continues to grow, as does the number with end stage kidney disease (ESKD). Diabetes accounts for at least 40% of CKD and over 50% of those that reach ESKD. Over $130 billion are spent on CKD each year in the United States.

The operations of the Center at the University of Miami will be closely aligned with the Katz Family Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine, The Peggy and Harold Katz Drug Discovery Center, the Miami Transplant Institute, the Department of Information Technology, and the Institute of Human Genomics. The Center will work in collaboration with other Departments and Institutions. Instrumental will be the collaboration with the Departments of Epidemiology, Genetics, Informatics, Immunology, Pathology, Human Genetics, Surgery, Pediatrics, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Cell Biology.

The Center's Clinical and Research Activities will focus on three key areas:

1. State-of-the-art genetic testing and counseling for inherited forms of kidney disease

2. Precision risk modeling to enable individualized therapeutic care paths

3. Advanced subphenotyping using multi-omic platforms for insights into disease pathogenesis and drug discovery

All of these efforts will lead to the opportunities for IP development, commercialization, and improvements in kidney health.

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:

The physician director will operate closely aligned with the Katz Family Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Department of Medicine lead by Dr. Alessia Fornoni.

The physician director will work to establish, build, provide oversight to the success of the Center at the University of Miami. He/she will establish a Steering Advisory Committee to govern, prioritize, and advise the Director.

In conjunction with Dr Fornoni, the physician director will work to appoint an Associate Director for education, an Associate Director for Innovation and Drug Discovery, an Associate Director for Nephropathology, an Associate Director for virtual remote care, and an Associate Director for clinical research. Scientific partnership with physicians in the practice and in the community caring for CKD patients will be offered. Each of the clinical trials developed at the Center will have a specific PI, who will operate under the leadership of the Associate Director for clinical research. Directors and Associate Directors at the University of Miami will be responsible of the development of the clinical, educational and research activities required to open new affiliated Centers in additional Countries as needed.

The physician director will be responsible for the overall operations and success of the Center, assuring financial viability.

The Center director will be responsible for hiring a center manager, a computer scientist and a study coordinator that will assist with the operational aspects involved in the implementation of Center discoveries into clinical application. The Center director will meet on a yearly basis with a Steering Committee composed on key faculty and patient shareholders. The Center Director will be involved with mentor-mentee training of senior fellows and junior faculty members at both the Divisional and the Institutional level. The Center director will oversee the Clinical Research Activities occurring at the Katz Family Drug Discovery Center and will supervise the clinical research coordinator, take strategic decision on clinical trials participation as proposed by other faculty members, develop strategies to engage fellows into clinical research, promote a culture of innovation and community engagement, promote research targeting underserved patient populations.

Operational

• Lead a standing, multidisciplinary, steering advisory, and research committee meetings that will provide input, and continued success of the center

• Develop and lead a business model for Center state-wide visibility and financial sustainability

• Seek extramural funding and mentor other faculty members to seek these funding

• Develop educational modules for precision medicine implementation in Nephrology

• Monitor and assess extramural funding of the center, including study enrollment and overall performance

• Organize and coordinate fund raising events with the goal to build an endowment to sustain the center research activities

QUALIFICATIONS:

We seek a proven leader in clinical and translational artificial intelligence and advanced diagnostics in renal Health with a commitment to scholarly activity, clinical care, research, and education. It is imperative that this physician leader will work with the manager, administrators, physicians and staff in a collegial manner. This physician leader must be:

• Board certified in Nephrology

• Licensed in the State of Florida

• Appointment to the Hospital's Active Medical Staff

• Appointment to the University of Miami Medicine Faculty

• Proven administrative capabilities to lead and oversee a Center

METRICS OF SUCCESS:

Over the first five years, the Center Director is expected to:

• Open dedicated advance diagnostic nephrology clinic in the UM system that served both general nephrology and the MTI. A blue print metric model based on how implementation of advance diagnostic influences pre-emptive transplant referral will be developed.

• Obtain sufficient extramural funding and philanthropic support to allow for self-sustainability of Center research activities.

• Contribute to the development of a sub-fellowship program for precision medicine

• Mentor at least 1-2 junior faculty towards a successful K or K equivalent awar
