Wood perform consulting and EPCM services for many North American gas processing, power generation, and power distribution companies.

Wood currently has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Protection and Controls Engineer. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, South East Region, Transmission & Distribution, this position is located in any of our Florida offices (Tampa, West Palm Beach, Miami, Lakeland, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tallahassee, Pensacola) office. Key Responsibilities

  • Providing technical leadership and support to a team of engineers and designers to develop protection, control, and metering system design for electrical substations ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV from conceptual stage through construction and commissioning
  • Designing protection, control and metering systems for electrical substations of 12 to 500 kV
  • Developing protection application documents, one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and IED settings for power system protective relaying and metering systems
  • On assigned projects, serving as Technical Lead and:
    • Developing protection planning and application documents, one-lines, schematics, panel layouts and wiring diagrams for power system protective relaying and metering systems
    • Performing protection coordination studies and relay settings for high voltage utility transmission systems
    • Reviewing or preparing project conceptual, feasibility and definition phase scopes and estimates
  • Preparing and reviewing drawing lists, engineering documents, specifications, and inspection and testing plans/procedures
  • Writing and planning project scope(s), staging plans, test plans, proposals, estimates, schedules, and budgets
  • Reviewing design documentation with the Owner's Engineer to ensure the design satisfies the project's requirements
  • Reviewing of vendor documents against specifications
  • Preparing material take offs for all P&C equipment, as well as ordering materials through the procurement group
  • Performing factory inspections of P&C equipment
  • Coordinating construction and commissioning activities with utility clients and subcontractors
  • Responding to information requests from construction sites and completing project documentation, including as-builts, calculations and returning data to clients
  • Traveling to site and liaising with internal groups, external contractors and clients
  • Enhancing and maintaining relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients
  • Leading projects from conception through construction and commissioning, including mentoring junior engineers and designers
  • Supporting Business Development team in preparing proposals and estimates
  • Liaising with clients at the discipline level on technical matters
  • Reviewing new engineering standards, design practices, guides, etc. from clients and sharing with the P&C team
  • Enhancing and maintaining relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients
  • Mentoring junior engineers


Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-10 years (intermediate or senior) of utility-specific protection, control, and metering experience
  • Experience with Florida Power & Light or Duke Energy is an asset
  • Experience with tools such as AIM, AMP, and PUR is an asset
  • Electrical Engineering Degree from a recognized university along with the ability to eventually register as a Professional Engineer in the United States
  • Proven working experience of relay setting software such as ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, SKM Power Tools as well as SEL and GE relay programming software
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven field experience with outage planning, construction sequencing and commissioning is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with utility protection and control maintenance and operational practices is considered an asset
