Hiring rate based on nursing experience -- $34.142/hour minimum. Additional $3.00/hour facility differential for hours worked. We want you to join our team!

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Under limited supervision of a Nursing Director/Associate or Nurse Supervisor, provides professional nursing care for ill, injured, or disabled inmates. Provides clinical direction and guidance to Licensed Practical Nurses and direct care staff, provides direct patient nursing care and treatment within the scope of licensure, in a correctional setting. Performs patient care in a clinic or hospital setting. Administer medications, transcribe and carry out doctor's orders, assess patients utilizing protocols, triage. Assist in moving patients.

REQUIREMENTS: A current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska.

PREFERRED: Experience in assigning, reviewing, leading, or supervising the work of others.

OTHER: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Will complete four to eight weeks of on the job training. Must submit to background security check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services' Pre-service Training Program

Knowledge of: nursing theory and practice; accepted standards of care; policies and procedures governing nursing care; sanitation and infection control standards, policies, and procedures; techniques of providing quality nursing care; standards for charting medical records; current medications, their uses and reactions; Nebraska regulations pertaining to nursing scope of practice. Skill in: coordinating and providing nursing care. Ability to: observe changes in the medical condition of patients and effectively communicate these changes to other nursing staff members and physicians; consult with clinical specialists; instruct others in patient care; maintain accurate medical records and write periodic reports; communicate effectively with medical professionals, direct care staff members, and other facility staff members; follow oral and written instructions in exact detail, maintain a helpful and empathetic attitude toward patients; participate on an interdisciplinary team; utilize sound and effective professional nursing judgment.
