Position Summary:
Provides primary (acute, chronic and preventive) health care and emergency care to those seeking health services at the village clinic.

Position Qualifications:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Director of CHAP/Education and the Study Coordinator, the Research Nurse is responsible for assuring that the integrity and quality of the clinical research trial is maintained and that the trial is conducted in accordance with Clinical Practice Guidelines, federal and sponsor regulations and guidelines and Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation Policy and Procedure. The Research Nurse implements recruitment procedures for potential participants, facilitates enrollment of the trial from screening to randomization to study completion, ensures compliance with protocols and overall research and clinical objectives, participates in study-related procedures as required by the protocol, maintains accurate and timely documentation and maintains communication with the sponsor.

Position Qualifications:

  • Education Requirement:
    • Graduate from an NLN accredited school of professional nursing.
    • BSN preferred.
  • Experience Requirement:
    • Minimum of two (2) years recent RN experience in clinical setting.
    • Ability to perform selected physical assessments and procedures such as vaccine administration, venipuncture and obtaining specimens in patients of all ages, including infants and young children.
    • One (1) year of recent RN experience in clinical trials with human studies desirable.
    • Prefer experience in working in cross-cultural settings.
  • License, Certification, Registration:
    • Must be licensed in good standing in the State of Alaska as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
    • Current BLS. PALS preferred.
    • The successful candidate will be required to pass and maintain competencies for this position.
  • Equipment/Tools:
    • Office equipment (i.e., telephone, computer, fax machine, copy machine, etc.) and medical equipment as appropriate for the position.
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
    • Must be proficient with RPMS and the Wyeth Database within 30 days of hire.
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
    • Knowledge of current professional nursing principles, standards and practices necessary to plan, organize and implement the nursing aspects of clinical research protocols.
    • Ability to adhere to and implement rigid protocol guidelines and work within strict schedules and deadlines.
    • Knowledge of current research methods including CDC, NIH, FDA and IHS research regulations.
    • Knowledge of epidemiology and statistical compilation and interpretation is desirable.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Medical knowledge sufficient to review patient medical records and synthesize medical history, clinical information, and laboratory results in order to individually confirm diagnosis and arrive at an accurate assessment of the patient's current health status.
    • Must have the ability to communicate, retrieve and present data and information both verbally and written.
    • Knowledge and skill in interpersonal communication and interviewing techniques necessary to explain research protocol to participants, obtain informed consent, and to provide long term follow up to maintain continued participation.
    • Knowledge of infectious disease transmission, course, symptoms, sequella, markers and epidemiology.
    • Experience in infectious disease epidemiology and population-based research is desirable.
    • Knowledge of preventive health care and community health nursing necessary to plan and implement disease intervention strategies (medical, educational, behavioral and environmental).
    • Experience with providing patient education.
    • Ability to educate individuals and families in disease transmission, prevention and care.
    • Knowledge, skill and ability to provide cross-cultural counseling and health education.
    • Ability to work in patient care setting.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Minimum of two (2) years RN nursing experience.
    • May supervise daily activities of project in Research Coordinator's absence.
