The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

This position will assist the Principle Investigator in conducting research in Cancer Biology/Molecular Hematopoiesis in the Molecular Oncology and Experimental Therapeutics research group within the Wells Center for Pediatric Research, requiring expertise in the application and adaptation of various research techniques and procedures associated with Cancer Biology/Molecular Hematology/Oncology. Coordinate laboratory activities that pertain to the usage of various microscopes and activities involved in complex histological and immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques. This position will maintain all histological and IHC records and maintain all histology equipment. This position will supervise the research activities pertaining to histological and IHC work as well as participate in protocol development pertaining to histology and IHC assays.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Performs highly complex and intricate laboratory experiments.
  • Leads protocol development, data analysis and report preparation.
  • Maintains safety records and ensures safety/compliance procedures and protocols are followed.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises lab staff and student employees; assures observation of safety policies.
  • Maintains fiscal accountability of the program and approves all expenditures for the lab.
  • May develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for research projects and related work.
  • May present research findings to staff, leadership, and external partners.
  • Conduct a wide range of complex laboratory and research experiments with a degree of independence in conducting research on the molecular hematopoiesis of neurofibromatosis type 1 and the genetic and molecular pathogenesis of neurofibromatosis type 2; utilizing existing and newly-developed experimental techniques. Performs complex techniques or procedures associated with immunohistochemistry and histology assays.
  • Coordinate assignment of laboratory personnel pertaining to work involved in the usage of histology and IHC; monitor completion of assigned tasks and provide training to research technicians and/or graduates students as needed as pertaining to histology and IHC work. Train laboratory personnel in various histology and IHC techniques.
  • Assist in preparing completed research reports or analyses on each project phase. Participates in the tabulation and computation of project results.
  • Equipment utilized: Computer, light microscope, various histology and IHC equipment, mechanical pipet, and various types of centrifuges.

Qualifications

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Master's degree in a science related field and 3 years of research experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field and 6 years of research experience

  • Experience with basic and translational research, data forms, and computer systems, proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel required.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to IBC and IRB rules and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain certification/privileges for access to IBC and IRB facilities and agrees to adhere to all rules/regulations associated with IBC/IRB study protocols

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
