GENERAL SUMMARY:

The research assistant (RA) will support ultrasound related clinical research in the Cardiovascular Division of Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) starting May/June 2023. The RA, working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and following established policies and procedures, will be working in clinical areas of BWH and will require professionalism, self-motivation and the ability to work independently. There will be training in all required tasks initially and throughout the project. The RA may be responsible for the following activities: recruiting and evaluating patients for studies; collecting, entering and organizing patient data; scheduling patients for study visits; and maintaining and updating ultrasound and research data.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides assistance on clinical research studies as per study guidelines and protocols.


  • Recruits and evaluates potential study patients. Per protocol instruction, conducts telephone interviews or schedules patient for study visit and screening.


  • Interact with patients/subjects with regards to study, including patient education, procedural instruction, follow-up. May serve as a liaison between patient and physician.


  • Learn the basics of ultrasound including equipment used in the hospital.


  • Utilize REDCap and Excel to assist in data collection efforts, database development, and descriptive data analysis. (In-house REDCap training is available.)


  • Responsible for collecting data and maintaining patient information database for study including review of charts. May be required to input data, perform basic data analysis and run various reports. Maintains patients' records as part of record keeping function.


  • Responsible for emailing various ultrasound and study information or results to study participants and providers.


  • Answers any phone calls and inquiries regarding study protocol. Refers participants when appropriate to supervisor or clinical staff.

  • Acquires and analyses research related ultrasound images.


  • Weighs study participants and performs point-of-care laboratory testing.


  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies when necessary.


  • Assist with grant progress reports and IRB submissions as needed.


  • Conduct other administrative tasks (photocopying, scheduling, etc.) as needed.


  • Set up team/stakeholder meetings and take minutes.


  • Perform literature searches and assist with manuscript preparation.

  • SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Able to multitask and assign priorities in a busy environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills are required for working with the study participants.
    • Able to work well with a diverse, collaborative team.
    • Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
    • Understanding of basic medical terminology preferred.
    • General knowledge of clinical research principles.
    • Experience and knowledge of MS Office computer programs (Word, Excel), etc.
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Candidate MUST be highly organized and have precise attention to detail.
    • Ability to accept and adjust to feedback from supervisors.
    • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for participants' rights and individual needs.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    None

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Professional office setting located in the Longwood medical area in Boston with research activities being conducted at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Candidates should be able to lift light equipment, and assist study participants, e.g. with positioning them on a stretcher or transport within the hospital in a wheelchair.

    Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Undergraduate degree, preferably in the medical field, or pre-medical degree with clinical experience.

    Interest in clinical research strongly preferred.
