Position Summary

The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications for a Research Associate with an NIH/NIDA-oriented research career development plan. 25% of the Research Associate's time will be set aside for developing, writing, and submitting a mentored NIDA K99-R00 application by the end of the first year of employment. For the remaining 75% effort, the Research Associate will serve as Project Director for a multi-year and multi-site NIDA R25 Science Education award. Research Career Development mentoring and project supervision will be provided by Professor Jim Anthony. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal based upon performance and available funding.

Required Early But Not Yet Independent Research Career Stage for Applicants

New or recently earned PhD, MD, PharmD, or other appropriate doctoral degree, with no more than two years since completion of all degree and/or clinician residency requirements so that the initial appointment can occur with a minimum of two years remaining eligibility for the planned K99/R00 award. (NIH specifies that K99/R00 applicants must have no more than four years of 'postdoctoral research experience' per https://researchtraining.nih.gov/programs/career-development/k99-r00.)

Required Degree

Doctorate -Epidemiology, psychology or related field

Minimum Requirements
  • An appropriate degree with a track record of research or appropriate scholarly contributions to the peer-reviewed journals of the field, appropriate for the early stage but not yet independent investigator status described above.
  • A passion for science and for a long-term research career path at the intersections of epidemiology, developmental research (e.g., pediatrics, aging, developmental psychology), economics or econometrics (including behavioral economics), and operations research or other implementation sciences, with sustained NIDA and other NIH funding at the core of the fellow's future career path.
  • An already drafted personal statement that demonstrates a grasp of the theoretical, pragmatic, and logistical challenges for new and exciting research at the just-described intersections.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and professional skillsets with a work ethic appropriate to the career development and multi-site programmatic tasks described above.
  • Demonstrated excellence in English writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated quantitative aptitude and enjoyment of mastering and applying computational software required for epidemiological and econometrics modeling activities.
  • Commitment to excellence in the instruction and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate or professional school research trainees.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming (Stata, Mplus, SAS, R).
  • First authored publication track record.
  • We are particularly interested in individuals with a history of promoting diversity in their research, teaching and service.
  • Satisfactory coursework in matrix & linear algebra, or commitment to learn.
