GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Our laboratory group pursues an exciting and fast-paced research program in the field of autoimmune disease. We identify novel human autoantigens with the goal of using the antigens to detect (and using) the corresponding autoantibodies as markers for human autoimmune diseases. In addition, we use cellular and molecular biology techniques to determine the role of human antigens in cellular biology. The Research Technician I will have experience in molecular biology, chemistry, and physics and will report to Dr. Bloch in the Departments of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (DACCPM) and Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School. This position is ideal for college graduates planning to go to medical or graduate school.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Research Technician I will work on one or more projects and will perform experiments utilizing methods in DNA and protein analysis (qPCR, DNA recombination, Western blotting, electrophoresis etc.), histology, and cell culture. The applicant will attend lab meetings and work related lectures, and will keep a clear and cohesive lab notebook complete with protocols, sample lists, data, and results. The successful candidate will perform experiments, analyze results, and participate in their interpretation. He/she will also share in responsibilities for lab organization and ordering.

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.

  • Common laboratory techniques include RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, Western blots and protein isolation, sterile tissue culture, expression plasmid preparation and transfection into cell lines.
  • The research technician will be involved in all aspects of the research process from designing and executing experiments, to analyzing and presenting data, to writing final research papers
  • Maintains laboratory notebook
  • Participates in weekly lab meetings and present data
  • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques
  • Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of results
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

This position is ideally targeted towards a candidate interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine or biomedical research, but all that are interested are encouraged to apply. My laboratory has mentored numerous students as they transition to either medical school or graduate school. Dr. Bloch is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an Associate Biologist in the Division of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and an Associate Physician in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Medicine.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Must be highly organized
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, speaking and writing skills
  • Understanding of laboratory practices and procedures preferred


Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.
  • Prior molecular and cellular biology lab experience is strongly recommended, but not required
  • 2-year commitment is preferred
