Ideal Candidate Statement: The ideal candidate should have experience leading a crew of landscapers or grounds people. This candidate should be familiar with gas-powered landscaping equipment. Have experience with hardscape, drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, timers, troubleshoot and repair irrigation plumbing, and lawn care. Candidate should be able to determine tree health, tree limbing, and tree removal.

Job Description Summary: Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations, the position is responsible for leading the groundskeeping team in the field of operations. The position is responsible for organizing the day to day landscaping operations to ensure that all daily assignments and special projects are completed. The position is also responsible for performing to performing landscaping duties on all District grounds.

Essential Duties:

  1. Provides lead direction in the field to journey level position to assist the supervising manager in directing the day to day operations and special projects.
  2. Apportions work amongst journey level positions and unclassified staff to ensure the completion of everyday duties and special projects.
  3. Monitors grounds keeping field operations to assist the supervising manager remain abreast of any needs, changes, or disruptions.
  4. Recommends estimate time, material, or labor costs during project planning.
  5. Relays information from custodians to supervising manager in relation to the restocking of supplies, problems with custodial equipment, and any issues arising from the performance of field work.
  6. Mows lawns, athletic fields, and other turf areas.
  7. Edges fields and walkways.
  8. Cuts down trees and bushes as required.
  9. Trims trees, bushes and plants.
  10. Inspects irrigation systems by checking clocks, sprinkler heads, valves, and pipes to identify leaks, conducts maintenance, and performs repairs.
  11. Cultivates flowers, trees, grass and shrubs by performing planting activities such as, but not limited to, pruning, fertilizing, irrigating, and weeding.
  12. Cleans general grounds such as, but not limited to, parking lots, athletic fields, lawns by raking leaves, picking up litter, and sweep litter from walkways and driveways.
  13. Ensure that grounds equipment such as, but not limited to, mowers, chainsaws edgers, blowers, power pressure sprayers, and gardening tools is in safe operating conditions.
  14. Removes pool covers.
  15. Empties waste receptacles outside buildings and around campus.
  16. Reports any issues and discrepancies to the lead custodian or appropriate personnel.
  17. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  18. Performs related duties as assigned.





Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: KNOWLEDGE OF:
  1. Best practices and techniques of landscaping/grounds keeping.
  2. Powered equipment such as, but not limited to, mowers, tractors, chainsaws, and pruning saws.
  3. Common hand tools used in grounds keeping such as, but not limited to, shears, pruners, axes, shovels, and rakes.
  4. Fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides.
  5. Irrigation methods and systems.
  6. Artificial turf fields.
  7. Safety practices in handling grounds keeping equipment.


SKILL TO:
  1. Apply knowledge of landscaping best practices and techniques to ensure that day to day duties are performed under accepted practices.
  2. Apply knowledge of herbicides and insecticides to control the growth of undesirable vegetation and pests.
  3. Apply knowledge of fertilizer to ensure that successful growth of plants, flowers, and grass.
  4. Apply knowledge of powered equipment, and common grounds keeping hand tools to mow lawns, remove unwanted items, edge walkways, clean groundskeeping areas, trim trees and bushes, and maintain groundskeeping areas.
  5. Apply knowledge of irrigation methods and systems to adjust the amount of water consumption and prevent waste.
  6. Apply knowledge of artificial turf fields to remove turf, replace cushing pads, disinfect the turf, and prevent the growth of bacteria.
ABILITY TO:
  1. Effectively meet deadlines and ensure that landscaping duties are performed in a timely manner.
  2. Effectively ensure that work is being performed to departmental standards.
  3. Ensure the beautification of District grounds.
  4. Effectively ensure the safe operation of powered equipment such as, but not limited to, mowers, tractors, chainsaws, edgers, pressure sprayers, and pruning saws.
  5. Effectively ensure that all grounds keeping tool and equipment is in safe operating conditions.
  6. Empty waste receptacles in a timely manner.
  7. Effectively ensure the safe handling of herbicides and insecticides.
  8. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  9. Develop and maintain effective relationships with District staff.


Education and Experience: Any combinations of 1 year of experience working in a related field.Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual and Biliterate.
Related specialized training(s).
Certified to spray chemicals for weed control.


Salary Range:
SEIU Salary Schedule Range 33$53,184 Annually$61,584 Annually$67,884 Annually
