We are looking for a Software Engineer to be a key full-stack contributor to our internal and customer-facing web applications. The individual filling this position will collaborate with product owners and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop and maintain the software that delivers customer data collected by our autonomous satellite operations. As an early contributor, they will play a key role in Umbra's efforts toward redefining how space radar data is consumed. This position can be located in Santa Barbara CA, Austin TX, or Fully Remote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, test, and maintain applications that task our satellites and deliver data collected by them.
  • Build, test and maintain Canopy, our commercial customer order and delivery web platform
  • Balance ownership of technical tasks and collaboration with other software engineers and internal stakeholders
  • Help establish and adhere to DevOps practices that ensure that customer and satellite-operational needs are met with quality and performance

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent experience in relevant discipline
  • Good communications skills, ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and willingness to learn new skills and technology
  • 2+ years of professional experience developing highly available web services with server-side scripting languages, preferably TypeScript/Node, Python
  • 2+ years of experience designing, developing, testing intuitive and well documented commercial RESTful API
  • Demonstrated foundational understanding of software architecture, event-driven microservices, interface design, and automated testing patterns
  • 2+ years of professional experience with modern SPA development frameworks/libraries, preferably React
  • Strong understanding of HTML and CSS
  • Experience with SQL, database-backed applications, and relational database concepts

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing and documenting commercial APIs with Swagger/OpenAPI
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure monitoring principles, best practices, and implementation
  • Solid understanding of cloud and application security, access control, and identity management
  • Experience building custom GIS applications, STAC, or other imagery catalog APIs
  • Experience with GIS, spatiotemporal assets, or geospatial mapping tools, e.g. Cesium, Mapbox, WebGL
