Colorado College

Assistant Vice President and Director for Student Financial Services

Colorado College (CC), a distinguished liberal arts college in Colorado Springs, seeks an experienced, innovative student-centered leader to join a collaborative senior leadership team as the Assistant Vice President and Director for Student Financial Services (AVP).

Reporting to the new vice president for enrollment, Tony Cabasco, the AVP provides leadership and vision for the Student Financial Services Office (Offices of Financial Aid and Student Accounts). With specific responsibility for the administration and management of all federal, state, and institutional financial aid and scholarship programs, and all student finance and accounts receivable functions and operations, the AVP provides supervisory support and direction to a staff of twelve professionals – nine in financial aid and three in student accounts - with three direct reports. As an integral part of the Enrollment team, the AVP partners closely with the Vice President for Enrollment and the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Admission.

Colorado College is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students and prioritizes need-based aid, using federal and institutional methodologies that includes the CSS Profile. CC only awards a small number of merit-based scholarships, which are handled by the admissions office. Beginning with the 2020 entering class, Colorado College made the historic Colorado Pledge to address affordability concerns in higher education.

The Office of Student Financial Services provides innovative service, thoughtful financial counseling and education, and strong stewardship of both family and College resources, as the team is responsible for the disbursement of $57 million in financial aid, including $39 million of institutional grants, and management of students' financial accounts with the College. Student Accounts serves as the cashier's office for the college, performs the collections function for both accounts receivable and the remaining Federal Perkins Loan Program participants, and administers fee assessment and billing and student refund disbursements, among other relevant functions. Student Financial Services also include management of student employment processes for hiring departments, supervisors, and student employees. Over 1,000 CC undergraduates work on campus, earning wages of over $1.5 million.

A private, four-year liberal arts college with approximately 2,300 undergraduates, Colorado College (CC) draws upon the adventurous spirit of the Rocky Mountain West. CC is the only institution of its kind in the region and is known for challenging educational norms. The innovative Block Plan, where students take and faculty teach one class at a time for three-and-a-half weeks, allows for exploration and immersion simply not possible with a traditional, multi-course academic calendar.

CC has implemented a commitment to antiracism and elevated mental health and well-being to a key priority for the college, with an expansion of support and resources for students, faculty, and staff. Recently, CC received the 2023 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT into Diversity for its outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The ideal candidate will embrace CC's long history of thinking differently and possess an unwavering dedication to Colorado College's liberal arts mission and antiracism commitment. A record of accomplishment of increasing compositional diversity of the student body and an ability to operationalize antiracism are essential for success. The Assistant Vice President will have a consultative and motivational management style, the ability to help colleagues successfully navigate change, and will be eager to develop talented student accounts and financial aid professionals. A solutions-based, student-centric approach; outside-the-box thinking; ability to move at pace; and a demonstrated collaborative spirit will be assets for the role.

The successful candidate will bring a minimum of six years of student financial services experience that includes at least three years of significant, progressively responsible management experience administering student aid and student finance programs. A commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and cultural competency is required as is an earned bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a master's degree or equivalent in business, finance, public administration, or a related field is preferred.

Colorado College is located just blocks from downtown Colorado Springs, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, the city is renowned for its outdoor recreational opportunities, with numerous hiking trails, parks, and a rich cultural scene. The cost of living is relatively low compared to other major cities, and the education system is highly rated, making it an ideal place for families.

To learn more or nominate a candidate, please be in touch with WittKieffer consultants Rob Springall and Jess Cummings at: Jcummings@Wittkieffer.com. The expected compensation range for this position is $125,000 to $145,000, plus Colorado College's exceptional suite of benefits.
